Summary

The Section of Thoracic Surgery and the Transplant Center at the University of Michigan are seeking an experienced lung transplant surgeon to join the Section as the next Surgical Director of the Adult Lung Transplant program at UM Health. The surgeon will serve as the Surgical Director of the Adult Lung Transplant and will partner with the Medical Director to oversee all clinical care, regulatory, and strategic development efforts for the lung transplant program. This individual will facilitate timely inpatient/outpatient care including the direction of the thoracic ECMO program for the care of pre- and post-transplant patients. Candidates should be committed to clinical excellence, and dedicated to teaching, innovation, and research in clinical transplantation. Strongest consideration will be given to candidates who bring diverse perspective, background, and training to the position and our Center.

The lung transplant program at Michigan Medicine was established in 1990 and has performed over 925 lung transplants to date. The adult lung transplant program is one of 8 solid organ transplant programs supported by the Transplant Center at UM Health, and is supported in partnership with the Departments of Internal Medicine and Surgery. The Surgical Director position is supported with a 40% administrative appointment from the Transplant Center, to provide time for leadership of the programmatic development and quality of the adult lung transplant program. Support in brand management, referring provider outreach, process improvement, and administrative support is provided by the Transplant Center. Growth of the adult lung transplant program to better serves the needs of the patient of the state of Michigan and the region is a priority for the Transplant Center and Michigan Medicine, and the Surgical and Medical Directors will be actively supported to accomplish this mission. Michigan Medicine boasts an extensive research infrastructure within both the Department of Surgery and the Transplant Center which will be coupled with additional resources available to the candidate to participate actively in transplant-related research which may include either basic/translational science, health services research, and/or clinical trials depending upon the interests and qualifications of the individual.

Required Qualifications*

The candidate must be board-eligible or board-certified in Thoracic Surgery and must meet the requirements for the Primary Lung Transplant Surgeon according to UNOS/OPTN Bylaws. Candidates must hold or have the ability to obtain the appropriate medical licenses in the State of Michigan and Federal DEA registration. Candidates should have appropriate qualifications for consideration of the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor, in either the clinical or instructional track.

Background Screening
