Job Description:

Biological Scientist II

Cell and Molecular Biology

Design and perform research experiments investigating the mechanisms of muscle pathology, including mammalian cell isolation and culture, cloning, plasmid preparation, and gene therapy applications, and microscopy.

Gene Expression and Protein

Plan and conduct advanced research projects including nucleic acid isolation for preparation of gene expression assays, including quantitative PCR and next-generation sequencing. Preparation of cell and tissue samples for protein-based analyses, including immunoblotting, ELISA, mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography.

Research Project Coordination

Participates in special studies or projects as directed; responsible for coordinating activities on assigned research projects. Aid in experiments, including training other laboratory personnel in techniques needed for advancement of research in the lab; provides consultation, guidance, and troubleshooting for others in the laboratory related to various aspects of lab techniques and procedures. Responsible for the complete understanding and compliance with all required laboratory regulations such as ACS, EH&S, IACUC, UF, State and Federal guidelines.

Scientific Writing and Dissemination

Analyze data and assemble results for scientific publications, grants, and conference presentations; assist in preparing data for scientific manuscripts, abstracts, grants, and other documents; manage accurate and complete laboratory research records and prepares daily written reports of experimental results; assists laboratory research with searches for and review of scientific literature relevant to the research focus of the laboratory. Aides in the development of new research and laboratory protocols.

Biological Scientist III

Cell and Molecular Biology

Design and perform research experiments investigating the mechanisms of muscle pathology, including mammalian cell isolation and culture, cloning, plasmid preparation, and gene therapy applications, and advanced microscopy techniques, including immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, and live cell imaging.

Gene Expression and Protein Analysis

Plan and conduct advanced research projects including nucleic acid isolation for preparation of gene expression assays, including quantitative PCR, next-generation sequencing, and appropriate downstream analyses. Preparation of cell and tissue samples for protein-based analyses, including immunoblotting, ELISA, mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography.

Research Project Coordination

Serves a liaison between PI/Director, lab staff, and collaborators within as well as external to UF. Coordinates special studies or projects as directed; responsible for coordinating activities of all ongoing research projects. Directs lab staff to aid in experiments including training other laboratory personnel in techniques needed for advancement of research in the lab; provides consultation, guidance, and troubleshooting for others in the laboratory related to various aspects of lab techniques and procedures. Responsible for the complete understanding and compliance with all required laboratory regulations such as ACS, EH&S, IACUC, UF, State and Federal guidelines.

Expected Salary:

Level II $47,000-$51,000 annually

Level III $55,000-$65,000 annually

Minimum Requirements:

Level II: Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or Master's degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.

Level III: Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with five year of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Extensive experience with sterile cell culture of mammalian cells, including experience in coordination with in vivo studies for cell isolation/specimen preparation. Expertise in molecular biology, including qPCR and cloning.
