About SIPS: The CALS School of Integrative of Plant Science (SIPS) encompasses five fields: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil and Crop Sciences. Combined there are 100+ faculty, 200 undergraduate majors, 200+ graduate students in six fields, and 600+ other employees located in Ithaca, Geneva, and other satellite locations across New York State. The School offers the multidisciplinary undergraduate major in the Plant Sciences and is also home to the Agricultural Sciences major. School faculty also contribute to the Biology, Global Development, and Viticulture & Enology majors.

About PPPMB: We are making new scientific discoveries about the interactions between plants and microbes and developing innovative solutions to address the challenges of 21st century agriculture across the globe. We offer students and postgraduate scholars unparalleled opportunities to study the origins and consequences of plant diseases. At the same time, we provide essential information to decision-makers, including agriculture producers, educators, policymakers, home gardeners, and local communities.

The employee needs to recognize and learn common plant and plant pathogen names (common & scientific); must be able to handle multiple priorities; should be comfortable using common software programs such as Microsoft Office, possibly Photoshop, and Instagram; and willing to learn the laboratory's custom database system. Taking photographs, formatting images and working with the diagnosticians to craft descriptions of plant pathogen infections and abiotic damage will be required for the development of social media postings.

The employee must possess and demonstrate a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, pay close attention to detail and become a contributing member of a team that plays a crucial role in preserving plant health in New York State. No previous work experience or coursework is required; however, completion of introductory plant pathology, horticulture and plant science courses will be very helpful. The employee must perform occasional clerical activities such as mailings, filing and meeting planning.

Duties will include three main areas of responsibility:

• PDDC operations: The employee will assist staff with diagnostic activities, sign-in samples, learn the laboratory's custom database system, prepare samples for testing, prepare reagents for procedures such as DNA extraction and PCR, perform various laboratory tests which may include ELISA and PCR, dispense supplies to workstations, post processing status to tracking boards and notebooks, and keep workstations and the laboratory clean and orderly.
• PDDC social media outreach and education: The employee will assist the staff with the development of social media postings to educate followers on a wide array of plant diseases and the pathogens that cause them and abiotic factors that can damage plants and plant diseases and the pathogens that cause them. The employee must be comfortable using common software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop or a similar image-editing software.
• Special project activities: The employee will assist staff with creating materials for funded projects. The activities include formatting materials specifically developed for boxwood blight sample collection, pathogen identification and management after a positive identification is made. Projects also include evaluating different game-type training aides to determine best fit for materials, gathering content and developing on-line professional development training aids for a Learning Management System, performing alpha-testing to ensure every step is functioning as planned, gathering beta-tester's observations and comments, and re-testing materials after changes made.

During the Summer of 2024 this is 39 hour per week, non-benefits eligible temporary role. Beginning in the Fall of 2024, the hours will decrease to 10-12 hours a week.

Pay range is between $ 20.00-$22.00/hour
